Album Review

As its title implies, 20 Best of Spirit of America collects instrumental versions of patriotic American songs, including "Fanfare for the Common Man," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and "Shaker's Melody From Appalachian Spring," as performed by the 101 Strings Orchestra. Befitting the collection's subject matter, the ensemble forgoes much of its trademark lush, more-than-slightly cheesy sound, opting for a more reserved, formal style that still sounds appealingly retro to contemporary ears. "Liberty Bell," "Strike Up the Band," and "Stars & Stripes Forever" are in keeping with this rousing but straightforward style, while "Ave Maria" and "Shenandoah" sound more like the schmaltzy 101 Strings that dominated the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Anyone looking for an extremely serious collection of patriotic music will be disappointed, but fans (ironic or otherwise) of old-school easy listening instrumentals will enjoy being carried away on the sweeping strings of 20 Best of Spirit of America.

Truly Amazing

A must have for any American searching for patriotic music. The recordings of Fanfare for the Common Man, America the Beautiful, Battle Hymn of the Republic, You're a Grand Old Flag, and God Bless America are inspiring and uplifting. I spent a while looking for good versions of some of these songs and this CD is by far the best I found. 5 out of 5.

Excellent, Inspiring Patriotic Music

For what it is, instrumental, classic patriotic music, I give this one 5 stars. I have the CD but went and downloaded a few songs from here just because I can't find it. If you love America passionately, then this traditional patriotic music will reflect and stirr your passion... no doubt about it. Their rendition of Liberty Bell is the best one I've ever heard. Most renditions make this song sound tired -- this one is stirring, as is most of this album. The rendition of The Battle Hymn of the Republic sounds alot like the one that was played at President Regan's state funeral -- again, the best I've ever heard.

Rated 50 stars and stripes!

Although this is not an album I would purchase for my home, I would especially for events!!! There is nothing more uplifting than to listen to patriotism in support of our troops, the 4th of July, Veteran's Day, parades, etc. Very traditional and well done. Wonder what the last dude's problem was with his comment? Although he is entitled to his opinion, I would suspect that he has some psychological issues!

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s

One of the most prolific and reliable names in instrumental easy listening music, the 101 Strings Orchestra has literally recorded hundreds of albums since its inception in 1957. Their trademark sound is built on a reverence for melody, pristine production, and a pleasant, relaxing ambience; while occasional albums have concentrated on brass, piano, guitars, and even mild rock & roll rhythms, the string section — true to the group's name — nearly always remains front and center, because...
