Album Review

It makes no sense to discuss 200 KM/H in the Wrong Lane, the first album by Russian dance-pop duo Tatu, without focusing on the gimmick, since that gimmick is the band. And the gimmick, of course, is that the girls are teenage lesbians who sing songs with suggestive titles like "Not Gonna Get Us," "Show Me Love," and "All the Things She Said," while covering that perennial anthem of tortured unrequited love and lust, the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?". It's heavy Europop, often helmed by Trevor Horn, and sung by two cute girls.

t.A.T.u. - 200 KM-H in the Wrong Lane

I first saw these girls on Conan O'Brien one evening, which was several years ago now. I liked the beat and the song was pretty good. There white shirts and little plaid skirts didn’t hurt either. Then suddenly, they started making out! I knew one thing at that moment,……I had to find out who they were and get their album! (I missed the groups name that evening, but eventually figured it out.) I have to say, I do love this album. The beats are great, the two have great voices together; as well as solo; and I love the included original Russian tracks. I actually think the Russian tracks are a bit better than the English spoken ones; which don’t get me wrong, are quite good for two people who hadn’t spoken a lick of English before. In fact, that’s also their draw besides the whole Lesbian kissing thing. There Russian accent makes the songs what they are. It just wouldn’t be the same with anything else. There gimmick drew me in, but there voices, lyrics and club dance beats have kept me coming back for more. I can't wait for their second album!

Great Album

The first song is "Not Gonna Get Us", a fast tempo song. Next is "All the Things She Said", a true story about two girls in love. The next song is "Show Me Love" that features a phone conversation in Russian at the beginning. "30 Minutes" is a ballad about thier forbidden love. "How Soon Is Now?" is a playoff of the Smiths which is the theme song of Charmed. "Clowns" is a techno-pop song about everyone around them (reporters etc.) telling lies and acting like clowns. "Malchik Gay" is a song about a girl liking a malchik gay. "Stars" is a slow ballad. Next 2 are Russian. Last: Extended Version.
