Album Review

The most iconic of Don Williams' songs, namely his '70s hits, were on his first volume of 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection, leaving the second installment as a bit of "more of the best" as it draws on his biggest hits from the late '70s and, particularly, the '80s. This should not be taken as some sort of judgment on the quality of the material since it is quite high, even if it isn't terrific, like it was on the first volume. Don Williams was having hits for a long time for a reason — his warm voice was perfectly suited for the laid-back country-pop of his era (indeed, he helped define its very sound), and even the second-tier, latter-day material is very, very good indeed, as this collection proves with hits like "I've Got a Winner in You," "Lay Down Beside Me," "It Must Be Love," and "Listen to the Radio." Hip-O's double-disc Anthology remains the best choice for serious listeners, but this is a fine choice for budget-minded fans looking for '80s hits from Williams.

Really Good Compilation

Volume One is a bit stronger than Volume 2; so do buy that one first. But. note that "Anthology" and "20 Greatest Hits" are also available, and I think, both better values. In my view, Williams is so good that the 40 song "Anthology" is worth picking up (its under 20 dollars, too) but if you want to save some money "20 Greatest Hits" has more songs for the same price as the "Millennium" CDs. The Millennium CDs sure are good, but I think too short. 12 Songs by Don is not enough!

With his laid-back, straightforward vocals and large, imposing build, Don Williams came to be known as "the Gentle Giant." That nickname was bestowed on him in the early '70s, when he began a string of countrypolitan hits that ran into the early '90s. Williams was never known as an innovator, but his ballads were immensely popular; in the course of his career, he had a total of 17 number one hits. Williams began playing guitar when he was child, learning the instrument from his mother. As a teenager,...
