Album Review

Though it's not nearly as comprehensive as the 1998 best-of Hatful of Rain, 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection does feature Del Amitri's biggest hits, such as "Roll to Me," "Driving With the Brakes On," and "Hatful of Rain," as well as key songs from their albums, within its dozen tracks. Despite its relative brevity, the collection does manage to fit in plenty of the band's affable, folky rock, spanning early successes like Waking Hours' "Kiss This Thing Goodbye" and "Stone Cold Sober," as well as their later work like Some Other Sucker's Parade's shiny, power poppy "Not Where It's At." While including some tracks off of Can You Do Me Good? would've been nice for completeness' sake, this collection does include "Cry to Be Found," which was previously only available on Hatful of Rain. And while that collection is still probably the definitive Del Amitri retrospective, 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection offers a wide-enough sampling of their best work to make it worthwhile for those who want only the hits.

"Best of" comp fails to compile their best songs

Seriously, "Tell Her This" not being on a Del Amitri best-of album? The lack of that and "Be My Downfall" make this album a waste, especially considering the bands "official" best-of album (Hatful of Rain) includes both songs and nearly every other track on this album (with the odd exception of "Hatful of Rain".) Do yourself a favor if you're considering this and pick up the Hatful of Rain best-of album, then if you really need the Hatful of Rain song just pick up that track here (or off of "Waking Hours", one of their better albums.)

Del Amitri's easy blend of Beatlesque pop and country-rock has made them a worldwide road and radio staple since the mid-'80s. Formed in Scotland in 1982 by bassist/vocalist/songwriter Justin Currie and longtime guitarist and collaborator Ian Harvie, the duo released Sense Sickness on a small Glasgow indie label the following year. Through heavy touring and positive word of mouth, the band — which now included drummer Paul Tyagi and guitar player Bryan Tolland — managed to impress the...
