Album Review

There have been numerous gigantic Madness anthologies — 1999's Lot box, 2000's Ultimate Collection, and 2002's Our House: Best of Madness — but none as concise as Hip-O's 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Madness. The group had so many excellent singles — "House of Fun," "Bed & Breakfast Man," and "Our House" — that there's not a bad track to be found. However, fans will no doubt be wondering where staples like "Baggy Trousers," "Michael Caine," and "My Girl" are, just to name a few. For a comprehensive look at one of the new wave\ska revival's most beloved acts, check out one of the aforementioned greatest-hits packages, but for a simple entry point that requires little in the way of laborious study, The Millennium Collection is a sure bet.

Good but

Good, but it's too bad it's only a partial album. And the missing songs are some of my favorites too: One Step Beyond and Bed and Breakfast Man...oh well...

4 Stars for 4 Amazing Songs

Madness were at the top of the British "ska" scene for a long time with a streak of top ten hits though they only managed to have two songs in the American Top 40. Those two were "It Must Be Love" (33) and Our House (7). These songs are classics and essential even if you aren't a true fan of Madness. The other two songs that I found to be good are House of Fun and Cardiac Arrest for their catchy rhythms. I would suggest buying the songs because the others seem almost exactly the same

Still Going Strong

It's great to see them as a 20th Century Master. Really one of the best bands of the last 30 years - often mistaken as light pop but those who don't know any better. They are still around - just had a hit musical in London "Our House" and their last original album 'Wonderful' is just that! You'll have to find that one in brick and mortar stores though...

Formed: 1978 in Camden, London, England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Along with the Specials, Madness were one of the leading bands of the ska revival of the late '70s and early '80s. As their career progressed, Madness branched away from their trademark "nutty sound" and incorporated large elements of Motown, soul, and British pop. Although the band managed one crossover American hit in 1983, they remained a British phenomenon, influencing several successive generations of musicians and becoming one of the most beloved groups the country produced during the '80s....
