Album Review

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Shangri-Las gathers a dozen of the tough-but-sweet girl group's definitive songs, including the classic "Leader of the Pack," "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)," and "Give Him a Great Big Kiss." "Out in the Streets," "I Can Never Go Home Anymore," and "He Cried" (a reworking of Jay & the Americans' hit "She Cried") are chief among the tracks that listeners only familiar with the first few songs on this collection will get to discover. Though it's not as awe-inspiring and complete as the British Myrmidons of Melodrama [RPM 136] retrospective, 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Shangri-Las is still a decent introduction to the group's theatrical, exuberant, and often poignant sound, offering their radio hits and just enough more to make it worthwhile for the mildly curious.

Beautiful!

The Shangri-Las are the one of the best girl bands of the 60s and they sing lovely. They will always have a place in our hearts forever

Love the Shangri-La's; tracks 10 and 12 problematic

The 5 star review is for the Shangri-La's and their wonderful songs, however 'He Cried' and 'Sweet Sounds of Summer' seem to have a defect in mid-song that causes it to skip ahead to the next. Itunes please fix this.

Years Active: '60s

Along with the Shirelles and the Ronettes, the Shangri-Las were among the greatest girl groups; if judged solely on the basis of attitude, they were the greatest of them all. They combined an innocent adolescent charm with more than a hint of darkness, singing about dead bikers, teenage runaways, and doomed love affairs as well as ebullient high-school crushes. These could be delivered with either infectious, handclapping harmonies or melodramatic, almost operatic recitatives that were contrived...
