Album Review

This 11-track collection highlights Kim Weston's tenure at Motown. Perhaps best known as one of Marvin Gaye's duet partners, Weston also had a few hits in the 1960s but never really took off the way some of her labelmates did. It is a bit of a surprise given her soulful, powerful voice and wholesome good looks. The disc contains two of her duets with Gaye, the classic "It Takes Two" and "What Good Am I Without You." Her biggest solo hit was the guaranteed dancefloor filler "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me for a Little While)." That track is here along with nine other solo works. Best of which is the Northern soul stomper "I'm Still Loving You." The disc is marred by the inclusion of an overwrought version of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" that is quite out of place on such a poppy collection.

The Best Of Kim Weston

Born in Detroit I sure know what a Kim Weston original song is suppose to sound like! The songs ʻHelplessʻ, ʻTake Me In Your Armsʻ, and ʻIʻm Still Loving Youʻ are the originals versions. ʻ Looking For The Right Guyʻ, which I purchased several years ago, does not contain 2003 stereo mix, and is the original version in itʻs purest form.
ʻJust Loving Youʻ does contain 2003 stereo mix, which makes it (not) an original. My biggest disappointment is how they dare use this version of ʻʻ A Thrill A Momentʻʻ, which is not the original version, and my ALL TIME FAVORITE! song by Kim Weston, from 1965. When it comes to music, I demand only the ORIGINAL VERSION, OR NOTHING!!!!!!!!

Best known as a duet partner of Marvin Gaye, Kim Weston also charted with some of her own solo sides during the '60s, although she never had the breakout success of a Martha Reeves or Diana Ross. Born Agatha Natalie Weston in Detroit in 1939, she started singing in her church choir at age three, and by her teenage years had joined a touring gospel group called the Wright Specials. She signed with Motown during the company's early days, scoring a minor R&B hit in 1963 with "Love Me All the Way." The...
