From the Inside

From the Inside

Chronicling Cooper’s stay in a sanitarium, 1978’s From the Inside is wracked by substance abuse and personal demons. The harrowing title track is a brutal depiction of blackouts and meltdowns set to a glam-disco shuffle, and “The Quiet Room” has the singer crooning about suicide over twinkling soft-rock chords. Yet there are also moments of tender beauty, like the soaring ballad “How You Gonna See Me Now,” an open letter to his wife in which he confesses his many failings.
