Shhhh. Don't Tell Anyone.
This is truly extraordinary music that rewards patience and repeated listening. At first, I dismissed it as kind of simple. Then the inner logic of it began to dawn on me. But slowly, surreptitiously, not at all like a ton of bricks. A quiet revelation, really. Then, first thing I knew, many gems had stealthily floated to the top of my "most played" list: Fugue No. 6 (my personal favorite), Prelude and Fugue No. 14, Fugue Nos. 7, 8, and 16. In my book, this music is right up there with the 15 string quartets.
This is probably one of the best albums I own. The piano playing is superb, and the music is so rich, that you will hear something new each time you listen to it. These preludes and fugues are right up there in musicality and artistry with Bach's Well Tempered Clavier (and they were composed for, I believe, Bach's 250th birthday celbration). This is a must have for piano lovers--or anyone who appreciates "classical" music (this is actually 20th century music). Plus, you won't find a better price.
