Album Review

Give Darin credit for choosing mostly American spirituals for this release, but he would have fallen flat on his back had he not been backed by the Bobby Scott Chorale on "Go Tell it on the Mountain," "Jehovah Hallelujah," and other rousing numbers. On the hymns, however, Darin is lost in syrupy arrangements.

What Was Avante Garde Is Now Reverent

When I received this album for Christmas 49 years ago it bordered on disrespectful because it was up-tempo and, well, it was Bobby Darin performing some religious Christmas songs. Now I listen to it and it's almost old-fashioned with a reverence that has all but disappeared, especially the songs in Latin that were to go by the wayside with the incredible errors of Vatican II at the end of that decade. Bobby Darin does a wonderful job in creating a joy of the season and giving what was then a new twist to some old favorites as well. I lost this (vinyl) album years ago. Searched for it here a couple of times at Christmas season and now I'm glad to see it's back. Well, I have to download this to enjoy again.
