Nerd-Rock at it's best...

My band played with Artichoke in 2000 in LA. We wore out (literally) the cd-r of their first album (which they refuse to sell us another copy of). Unfortunately, they never toured... or left L.A. :-( So, it wasn't until years later that in a total random moment of serendipity, our roadie from that tour and I were sitting around talking about music and he said "Remember that band Artichoke? That album was GREAT!" And literally, the next day, I came across a copy of 26 Scientists Vol. 1 at a record store. Never one to fly in the face of fate, I picked it up and fell in love with it... Then, I waited... and waited... and waited... and FINALLY.... they've come out with the VOl. 2. VOl. 2 is just as good (if not better than) it's predessor. Again, stylistically it ranges from electro-acoustic pop to synth-heavy post pop-wave to guitar heavy power pop, but the singers voice is unmistakeable and unwavering. It's a cliche, but every song has a great verse and an awesome hooky chorus. Young, Thomas gets wedged into my head constantly, Newton, Thomas, beside being a great song, reminds us that Newton was a jerk and probably a virgin when he died. Richter, Pavlov and Xenophanes are other standouts. This album is solid from the get-go. RIYL The Pixies, Weezer, Guided By Voices, Beck, Beulah, etc. Buy this album immediately so that hopefully they will leave L.A. and tour!!!

Two-fisted science

Timothy Sellers is a genius, with clever, playful lyrics, killer hooks and rockin' songs. Thomas Young and Isaac Newton, especially, are masterpieces of pop that had me singing along on the second listen. I can't guarantee you'll learn anything, but the facts are all there.

Gems of Science and Art

Take everything that was good about 26 Scientists Volume I, and there is even more of it here! Intriguing personalities in the sciences, boppy or dreamy or urgent tunes, lyrical sounds and poetic lyrics meld into a whole greater than their sum. The tightly-written Isaac Newton bio is particularly outstanding (and never before have I heard a guitar solo done vocally!). W.V.O. Quine and Zeno are also my favorites, about navigating through life and getting stuck in place, respectively. Artichoke continues to highlight notable women in the sciences - here I learned about Chien-Shiung Wu, who did the labwork making the Nobel Prize possible for theoreticians Lee & Yang, and Jeanne Villepreux, who had the remarkable gift to observe something the received wisdom said was not possible.
