iTunes Review

Country music means many different things to Dwight Yoakam, because what matters to him beyond the specifics of the genre is the emotion captured in the performance. If that means breaking from the tradition he so obviously loves, then so be it. Seven years since his last studio album of originals, 2005's Blame The Vain, 3 Pears expresses his values as if this were the first we'd heard of him. The cover of Joe Maphis' "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke," kicks up the genuine honky-tonk sweat of Yoakam's 1986 debut album, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.," while "Trying" throws in a soul ballad that could be from the 1960s, but with a tasteful production that could only be a modern creation, so deep are the keyboards and clear the guitars. "A Heart Like Mine," co-produced by Beck (yes, that Beck!), scratches out a raw, twangy number that's somewhere between Bakersfield country and Brit Invasion pop. Beck's other production, "Missing Heart" stays true to the song's classic country intentions. The album's most effective track, "Long Way To Go," captures the mixed feelings Yoakam seems to carry with him at every step.

Mind blowing!

This album is classic Yoakam! It shows how much he has grown as an artist and what he's learned along the way. There's pure country in every track and it's hard to pick a favorite, because each song is perfectly composed and written and your ears beg to listen. I love this album, Mr.Yoakam, and you should be proud!

With his stripped-down approach to traditional honky tonk and Bakersfield country, Dwight Yoakam helped return country music to its roots in the late '80s. Like his idols Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams, Yoakam never played by Nashville's rules; consequently, he never dominated the charts like his contemporary Randy Travis. Then again, Travis never played around with the sound and style of country music like Yoakam. On each of his records, he twists around the form enough to make it...
