Album Review

While not a creative breakthrough on par with the previous Like Gods of the Sun, the intriguingly titled 34.788%...Complete still reveals new facets of the My Dying Bride sound; the emphasis here is on the dynamic dual guitar work of Calvin Robertshaw and Andrew Craighan, which lends tracks like "The Whore, the Cook and the Mother," "Heroin Chic," and "Base Level Erotica" much of their visceral intensity. [The album's 2004 edition contains the bonus track "Follower."]

34.788$% Complete....kinda meh...

So there interesting thing about the title is that the guitar player got high and had a dream or vision God told him that Mankind wasn't through and that they were only 34.788% Complete. So that's where the album title comes from. This was MDB's attempt(admittedly by the band too) to go Commercial with their sound. They'd just done a tour with Dio and were on the upswing with album sales at the time, and the gamble didn't pay off. Of course with any band time will tell the tale of many albums, some are highly regarded though initially panned, others are initially panned, and time does not heal those wounded fans who placed their faith in the band(See Megadeth's Risk, Metallica's Load, Celtic Frost's Cold Lake etc etc). Over time this album would be considered OKAY. I've always say it's not that it is a BAD album, it's that it's not a good My Dying Bride album. I do play music as well and understand the need for bands to experiment and expand their sound, and grow as musicians. There are still a few strong songs on the album, but of all the MDB albums, this one is by far their weakest, and that isn't bad territory to be in!

For Sonicbrutality

I never like the term "Commercial Sound". To me that sounds like cheap Elevator Muzac. This is their experimental album where MDB tried out mixing electronica with their Gothic/Doom Metal style. Not their best by any means. But not horrible either.

Blah

It has it's moments but mostly it's like eating potatoes with no seasoning.
