Good sound, even if not original

General Norman Johnson has an unforgettable voice. If you like it, you will find this collection very pleasing. The song I know best, "Give Me Just a Little More Time," is not the original 1970 hit, but as picky as I am about remakes, I have to say that the version here was hard to distinguish from the 1970 single. I listened to them side by side, phrase by phrase, and both his singing and the band's work were extremely faithful to the original. In fact, there is a spot toward the end where the horns drop out that seems to have been edited in--in both recordings. That makes me wonder if this version is an alternate take from the original sessions. Probably not, but it's a nice clean remake, with no loss of energy. So, listen with an open mind.

North Carolina

Good lord... Sweet Tea, Chapel Hill Girls, Beaufort Town Dock, Sailing weekend after weeked on the Neuse River, and spending time with Friends that seem as close as family... This music makes me remember some of the best days of my life... Jumping off the dock at CYC, sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch and cutting the rug on the dance floor in Wrightsville Beach... Thankfull for it all!!!

Beach Music Anthology by General Johnson & Chairmen of the Board

It is a very fun, uplifting album and I would recommend it to anyone that likes beach music. It has many of the classic pieces on it and a lot of good tunes to dance to.

Best known for the stuttering number three single "Give Me Just a Little More Time," the Chairmen of the Board were one of the smoothest and most popular soul acts to emerge from Detroit in the early '70s. Although their time at the top of the R&B charts was brief -- their first Top Ten arrived in 1970, their last in 1973 -- they recorded a handful of '70s soul classics, all distinguished by the high, trembling vocals of General Norman Johnson, who also wrote the bulk of the group's material.
