iTunes Review

Taking the term "power trio" to devastating extremes, Unsane emerged from the depraved late-80s/early-90s New York noise rock scene, affiliated with like-minded groups such as Pussy Galore and Boss Hog. Known for their ferocious combination of pummeling percussion, hyper-distorted guitars, and largely undecipherable vocals, (as well as their trademark blood-drenched cover art), they occupied a murky space somewhere between extreme metal and post-post-punk. Their early singles and 1991 debut album are all undeniable classics, and, while the sophomore LP Total Destruction isn't quite as essential (due mostly to the overdose death of their Keith Moon-esque drummer Charlie Ondras, who was replaced by ex-Swans member Vinnie Signorelli), it's still a lot more compelling than most of the "grunge/alternative" music that was blowing up at the time. Check out "Straight," "Broke," and "455."

Buy It.

Buy this album. Buy every album these guys ever made. Just don't buy them on iTunes. It'a always better to own the hard copy and it's usually cheaper.

Unsane is one of the best bands to ever exist!

At least I think so. This is the album that got me into them.I found out about unsane watching beavis and butthead. The song was called "Scrape". And I bought this album thinking it was on it.It's not by the way. However after my immediate dissapointment, I checked out the record, and it hasnt left my regular rotation since. HAIL

A.O. = After Ondras

This album is a solid, four-star affair through and through. If you agree, check out their eponymously titled album, Unsane, from Matador records--it is a five-star album. The album cover on Unsane, and its murderous little ditty "White Hand", are more fearsome than what has followed in a consistently frightening career. Hey, I-tunes: work your magic and fill out Unsane's catalogue with its best output (even if you have to change the album cover)!

Formed: 1989 in New York, NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

New York City's Unsane assisted in pioneering a more aggressive, less studied version of noise rock, one that blended the scum/art industrial sturm und drang of Foetus, the Swans, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Sonic Youth with the decidedly more straightforward hardcore idiom favored by acts like Sick of It All. While developing the blueprint for noise-metal bands to follow, Unsane cut a remarkable swath through underground music, inspiring a devoted, cult-like following around the globe. As a power...
