iTunes Editors’ Notes

Named after a special road in her hometown of Leavenworth, Kan. (and also in Kansas City)—and the former street of her record label—4th Street Feeling features everything that's made Etheridge a major musical star since the late '80s. The production by Jacquire King (and Steve Booker on "Be Real" and the title track) is lean and mean, putting Etheridge's soulful vocals up front and bringing her road band in for some studio chemistry. The entire sound is tight and funky, as if the group were playing live in a room. The title tune brings forth the sound of '70s soul, with a Fender Rhodes matching the dry and punchy drum track and leaving plenty of room for Etheridge to emote, which she does with refreshing restraint. Throughout, the songwriting is smart and reflective, and Etheridge sounds musically invested. (She played all the guitars.) "Shout Now" smokes a vintage blues. "Be Real" evokes the spirit of '50s rockabilly with its slapback guitar. "A Sacred Heart" climbs toward '70s hard rock. The deluxe edition features the essential "The Beating of Your Heart" and two additional tracks.

4th street Feeling

I am thrilled to hear that Melissa has given us that rock-to-the-core edge that I love in her 1st few albums. It's a refreshing change from some of the more mainstream, lighter music we've seen form her lately. Love it!

Sorry, Ms. Etheridge, but this seems uninspired/tired

I have every album Ms. Etheridge has released. I am a real fan. That being said, this album would have benefitted from some new collaborations. I would like to see the phrase "fallen angel" or anything related to cars/road trips stricken from future lyrics.

The only track I will be purchasing is Shout Now. The others put me to sleep; sound unfinished or too much like previous songs.

I really wanted to love this new release, but I don't.

Blues, country, rock...Melissa can do it all....

I've been a fan for nearly 18 years...4th Street Feeling may not be the typical Melissa Etheridge, but I do applaud her for experimenting with a whole new sound. Every song on this album is crystal clear and I really love the different instruments she has added to it's flair. The entire album has potential! Keep up the great work Melissa! Your progression keeps getting better and better! See you on tour!

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Melissa Etheridge became one of the most popular recording artists of the '90s due to her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, Janis Joplin/Rod Stewart-esque vocals. But the road to stardom was not all smooth sailing for Etheridge as she debated behind the scenes whether or not to disclose to the public that she was gay early on in her career. Born May 29, 1961, in Leavenworth, Kansas, Etheridge first picked up the guitar at the age of eight and began penning her own songs...
