Selections from Road Atlas 1998-2011

Even the most hardcore Calexico fan may be hearing some of these songs for the first time. Over 13 years, the Tucson band recorded a hearty grip of tour-only vinyl that until now was only available from merchandise booths at its live shows. At just less than two minutes, “Half a Smidge” sets the tone with contemplative country-tinged indie folk, as Joey Burns sings “No can of WD-40 can fix your situation.” The flowing instrumental “Waitomo” follows, with chiming acoustic guitars and melodic six-string leads that come together over a pedaling drum beat, making for a perfect road-trip score. The similarly comforting instrumental “Glowing Heart of the World” recalls the band’s early imprints on the then burgeoning alt-country scene. But halfway through, the song brilliantly segues into an Ennio Morricone–inspired piece of spaghetti western melodrama, replete with baritone guitar leads. “Griptape” is a haunting standout that contrasts the pain of rejection and rebounds with soothing vocal harmonies.
