Album Review

At the start of their careers, New York electronic production duo the Knocks built their brand around remixes for high-profile artists like Ellie Goulding, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift. They went on to release a string of their own catchy, beat-heavy songs with a wide range of guests from Cam'ron to Carly Rae Jepsen. Many of these songs — along with a whole crop of fresh ones — appeared on their long-delayed debut, 55, which sounds like a "greatest-hits" collection of stand-alone singles. The roster of featured vocalists is impressive, with JPatt and DJ B-Roc combining talent from multiple genres and expertly utilizing the strength of each artist. Fetty Wap's wobbly rap-croon complements the sweet vocals of POWERS' Crista Ru on the Len-meets-Daft Punk summer rush "Classic." Wyclef Jean uses his party-maestro talents on the nocturnal funk of "Kiss the Sky." X Ambassadors' vocalist Sam Harris brings the passionate power on "Comfortable." The breezy Carly Rae track "Love Me Like That" is a throwback '80s jam that could fit on her 2015 album EMOTION. Indie rock band Walk the Moon contribute the soaring (and aptly titled) closing highlight "Best for Last." A handful of younger guests also graces 55 — like Brooklyn singer Matthew Koma, former Glee cast member Alex Newell, indie duo Magic Man, and singer Phoebe Ryan — balancing the star power with less-well-known talent. Despite the varying influences, 55 is a cohesive experience, tied together by the Knocks' masterful production and ability to craft an earworm. Customer Reviews

The Knocks 'Classic' is CLASSIC!

'Classic' is already one of my all time top 5 songs. Since the original has released I've played it over and over, never getting tired of the song - it's perfect for summer!

I rarely write reviews, but The Knocks are worthy of watching. Pre-released songs from this album - Collect My Love, Classic, I Wish... - already showcase some of the great collaborations The Knocks have with other well known music artists. To me, The Knocks have found the right blend of dance, electronica, hip-hop and pop to be perfect for clubs, yet enjoyable for listening anytime. I'd love to see the. Re-release R.O.Y.L. As I think that song came out well before its time.

Classic in the making

If you like groovy basslines, powerful vocals, and great production, look no further. each track offers something different.

The Perfect Album

Truly touches the soul both lyrically and rhythmically. It's an amazing soundtrack to life.

Formed: 2008 in New York, NY

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A production and DJ duo who specialize in melodic, carefree dance music that draws from soul, funk, disco, rap, and pop, the Knocks were formed in 2008 by James "JPatt" Patterson and Ben "DJ B-Roc" Ruttner. Patterson and Ruttner met at New York City's New School and shared an apartment, where they set up small recording studios in their bedrooms. The loud noise coming from their apartment would lead to neighbors constantly knock on their door in order to get them to pipe down, hence the duo's name....
