The Northampton, Mass.–based Potty Mouth has garnered press at least partly for being an independent all-female quartet named after a 1993 Bratmobile album—but songs as strong and immediate as “The Gap” and “Rusted Shut” should make gender and historical connections irrelevant for anyone who likes melodic indie rock from Mission of Burma to Superchunk. For a band inspired by the Riot Grrrl movement, there isn’t an overtly political tone here; rather, there's a more relatable personal vibe that any lover in turmoil can take to heart. Better yet, there’s a warm, attractive hum to the uncomplicated guitar chords, and whether it’s a modest song like “Black and Studs” or a grand pop tune like “Sleep Talk,” the effects are equally powerful. Singer Abby Weems is an understated vocalist who’s far more effective than her everyday profile might suggest. She doesn’t show off great range, but she has solid control over her territory and, along with lead guitarist Phoebe Harris, creates an admirable wall of sound. Not a bum track to be found.
