11 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Anyone hoping that the 11th-hour recruitment of Skrillex as coproducer would encourage Incubus to add vertiginous drops and bowel-shaking sub-bass to their eighth album will be disappointed. Despite that, they remain as dismissive of rock’s traditional boundaries as ever, roaming from New Wave pop (“Familiar Faces”) to dark-hearted electro-blues (“Loneliest”) and a dub/lounge-jazz mash-up (“Make No Sound in the Forest”). The Californians have never undervalued short, sharp thrills though; the riff-laden “Nimble Bastard” is exhilarating and incisive.

They Can Do NO Wrong

I am so sick of hearing Incubus fans complain about how they want the "old" Incubus sound back. I, for one, am glad that they don't put out the same albums over and over again, like Nickleback, where all of their songs sound the same. I love the evolution of their sound and I love what I've heard off 8 so far. These guys weren't thrown into a time capsule so that they can continue making music that resembles Science or Make Yourself.
Incubus has a sound that is unique to them and they do not sound like any other band out there. It's refreshing and their music is superb. I don't think that, out of the 20 years I have been a fan, I have heard a song that I didn't like. I hope they continue staying true to themselves and their craft. I'm grateful for Incubus and their original and innovative music!
Buy the album, it's great so far!

Evolved sound for an evolved crowd

If you like S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself, or Morning View, you probably won't like this, unless you are a casual listener. It just sounds like any other newer mainstream rock band now. They've long lost their funky experimental edge. I've been waiting for them to bring something a little more innovative to the table since the mid 2000s and it's not likely to happen. RHCP on the other hand has done well and retains their signature sound.

Something is off...

I'm disappointed at how different Nimble Bastard sounds on the album compared to how it sounded on the Single. It's a VERY different song on the album. Still preordered.
