Forward-thinking nostalgia

Escort's update of the 1970's disco era is more than a modernized take on dependable grooves. By concentrating on the underground disco sound, instead of the commercial style of the ubiquitous hits, this 2011 album manages to evoke yesterday and the future simultaneously. Straddling the genres of dance, electronica, and R&B, with a few random touches, Escort creates the type of release that can be played as a non-stop party, but without having to turn the record over. The production is often the star of the show, yet the beats and vocals never fully surrender, even when receiving a full-blown treatment for the headphones. "Cocaine Blues" is the most celebrated track, and it's a blueprint of what makes Escort so unique. The sampled elements combine a moderate hit by People's Choice with lesser-known tracks by Hamilton Bohannon and Dillinger for a cult-favorites collage that morphs into its own club/radio stomper. Further evidence of Escort's preference for the less obvious influences can be found on their reincarnation as the new millennium's Dr. Buzzard's "Original" Savannah Band on "A Sailboat In The Moonlight". The alterna-tronic vibe of the instrumental "Karawane" closes this consistent effort, and helps segue from past to present while reminding that the more things change, the more they stay the same. On "Escort", that's a good thing.

After years of checking to see if this band would put out some more grooves; FINALLY! Hits all the right buttons.

The finest disco disco disco!

Shake it to some of the sickest, slickest production out there. This is a true must have for fans of universally excellent dance music (which should be just about all of ya'll). The album exhibits a retro sensibility without sounding like a gimmick--Escort captures that late 70's/early 80's magic with a classic house energy to boot. These cats are straight up insightful into what makes a great dance record. Get it!

Formed: New York

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

During the early 2000s, guitarist/keyboardist Dan Balis and keyboardist Eugene Cho — musicians who met while attending Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York — produced and remixed house tracks for the Brique Rogue and Stay True labels. In June 2006, after opting to move closer to house music’s disco roots, the two hatched Escort with “Starlight,” a contemporary disco single that could have passed for a fresh take on a lost Skyy 12”. Recorded with the assistance of several musicians,...
