iTunes Review

Caravan have been sufficiently overlooked in the U.S. that they could use assistance in getting word of their intense musical innovation to the U.S. public. Yet progressive rock—beyond the obvious successes of Yes and ELP—has never been an easy sell, and Caravan’s determined Britishness has surely made their sound even more foreign to American ears. But from the joy of the concise early work (“Place of My Own,” “Magic Man”) to the beautiful organ runs from Dave Sinclair, who singlehandedly pushes “Where But for Caravan Would I?” into madness, it should be obvious that Pink Floyd aren’t the only band that should be allowed their excesses. The inclusion of the entire third album In the Land of Grey and Pink—including the “Nine Feet Underground” medley and a live BBC version of “Love to Love You”—proves that this set isn’t skimping on time. Not heavy on obscurities but solid on choices, this anthology should make the case for Caravan and serve as an excellent anthology of their work.

Pick and Choose

I did not purchase the entire album but there are several cuts that I found very interesting
and worthy of download. Try Golf Girl, Here I Am, If I Could Do It Over Again..., and C'thlu Thlu.
It is worth it to go through and listen to the samples and find what you like. These songs will
add a nice, new variety to your collection.

Buy the whole set

If you don't have a big collection of Caravan, you might as well buy the whole set. There are very few bad or boring songs. At $29.99 it averages out to 71 cents per song. Even if 10 songs were bad you come out would have paid more than $30 for the 32 good songs by cherry-picking. Trust me though, most of the songs are great, and the few that I did not like eventually grew on me.

Caravan were one of the more formidable progressive rock acts to come out of England in the 1960s, though they were never much more than a very successful cult band at home, and, apart from a brief moment in 1975, barely a cult band anywhere else in the world. They only ever charted one album in their first six years of activity, but they made a lot of noise in the English rock press, and their following has been sufficiently loyal and wide to keep their work in print for extended periods during...
