iTunes Review

From the band’s earliest known recordings to the multicolored layers of the psychedelic era on through to lo-fi demos and rooftop concerts, the Anthology Box Set provides a deeper understanding of that Fab Four magic. This set contains all three of the Anthology collections. You’ll also find material that remained unreleased for nearly three decades, such as the 1994 recordings based on John Lennon’s late ’70s demos and restructured by Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr (“Real Love,” “Free As a Bird”).

Could Have Been Even Better With More Studio Session Recordings

I bought these sets when they were released in late '95 through mid '96. I admit I was slightly disappointed with the first volume which covered 1958-1964. There were too many recordings of TV appearances and other live recordings which are somewhat substandard in terms of performance and sound quality as well as inserted narrations from the Anthology TV series which detract from this volume. By John Lennon's own admission the Beatles live performances had become substandard by late 1963 into 1964 and beyond. Most of their early EMI Abbey Road session tapes from June 1962 - July 1963 were erased and only the masters exist. The studio material here is somewhat sparse. However a number of decent quality bootlegs surfaced in the late Eighties, most likely from Lennon's private archives, that contain outtakes from the famous day long Please Please Me album sessions. Sadly none were used for this official release. I find the latter two volumes much more satisfying because you really get a taste of how the Beatles would develop songs, from demo to master and how the studio became more of a workshop of experimentation. Inferior live material is still present on Volume 2, but only on the first half. If you can't afford the price tag for the entire Anthology set, just cherry pick the previously unreleased songs and alternate takes of studio material. You will find these to be the most satisfying tracks.

The greatest

I always have and will love the Beatles. I don't know what happened to todays music but it needs to go back to the way it used to be; when music was more than a few lines on repeat.

What can be said

Everything has been said about the one and only Beatles. This set is for the fans who get to hear many things that never made it to the 13 albums they made. They set the standards in music that will remain for generations to come.

Formed: 1957 in Liverpool, England

Years Active: '60s

So much has been said and written about the Beatles -- and their story is so mythic in its sweep -- that it's difficult to summarize their career without restating clichés that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans. To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that were simultaneously...
