iTunes Review

Van Halen's first album since 1998—and the first since 1984 with original singer David Lee Roth—redelivers a band that still outrocks the competition. Former bassist Michael Anthony is missed for his backing harmonies, but Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang sufficiently holds down the bottom end. The mix is drier than vintage Van Halen, but Eddie still rips heavy riffs ("China Town," "Big River"), and Roth sounds glad to have his old job back. "She's the Woman" is one of several tunes written for the band's '70s demos that scored their record contract. "Bullethead," "Outta Space," and "As Is" keep up the momentum, with Roth back to being a self-mocking hard rock singer out for a good time. Eddie warps some classic riffs and tones for "Honeybabysweetiedoll" and "The Trouble With Never." Overall, it's three steps in the right direction and far better a reunion than those of other bands of Van Halen's vintage. The deluxe version includes The Downtown Sessions, videos of acoustic performances of "Panama," "Beautiful Girls," and "You and Your Blues."

Wish Michael was back.

Eddie is the man. Dave is still Rockin. Sounds great. Just wish we could get M. Anthony back.

The wait is over and boy am I relieved. After Tattoo was released I have to admit I was a bit nervous but listening to the rest has made me a very happy fan! Welcome back Van Halen! You were surely missed. The album rips!!

The Truth

Heaviest and most exciting Van Halen album I've ever heard. I'm satisfied. People who don't like it probably don't like Roth as singer. Dave is back and in a classic kinda way. He's 57 yrs old so you're not gonna get some of his earlier signature screams and high pitch singing. But he's smart on lyrics and finds a way to use his voice to make it work. And Edward is insane on guitar. He to me, sounds faster than ever and he's in his 50's as well. Great album. To be honest, I'm in shock and awe.

With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what the electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. It was wildly inventive and over the top, equaled only by vocalist David Lee Roth, who brought the role of a metal singer to near-performance...
