Album Review

At a Loss offer up energetic emo-ish punk-pop on their Blackout Records debut, A Falling Away From. At a Loss weave many different styles throughout the record: punk, emo, even metal, but seem to always make their way back to the pop and emo sensibilities that work for them. A Falling Away From never loses its energy and earnestness, but wanders a tad in its length and emotional agenda. All the musicians demonstrate their skill in the hot Sabbath-like slow licks of "In the Aftermath" and "Closing Yours" and the fast metal-punk riffs of "Look Away" and "Retract Your Wings," never getting too pompous on the thick axes or too showy on the hammering drums. At a Loss shine when they break out the half-time chumpdowns in the midst of the fast buildups, allowing a release just when you need it. A Falling Away From is a solid debut release from At a Loss.

a true gem

a rare, unique band from the Bronx that should have recorded more material before officially disbanding in 2007. all in all, a great release. this album covers the full spectrum: some older tunes that go as far back as 1997, mixed in with some newer songs, this could have just as easily been considered a "best of" compilation. creative songwriting, well exectuted and doesn't really seem to get boring anywhere on the record. the formula is familiar, yet full of surprises. they aren't afraid to challenge the listener. at the same time, it never gets too far out there in terms of trying to prove how eclectic they could be.
with tension and release in just the right places, and an extremely capable line-up, it makes for a very enjoyable trip to some places you will know and love, and some that are new and exciting.

this is an album that rewards any listener who's really paying attention.
