iTunes Editors’ Notes

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist John Gold writes lush, literate, and melodically rich songs that easily worm their way into your mind. The tunes on A Flower In Your Head, his third release, are dense and meticulously assembled yet so well tailored it’s tough to see the seams. Songs like “Honeymade” and “We Get High” begin simply enough — a strummed guitar or a basic piano pattern — and then layers of sounds and textures are added until the finished product is quite a different creation. Acoustic guitar, drum machines, horns, keyboards, and strings are among the building blocks of the songs, material that Gold uses to insert a catchy hook here, a power-pop chorus there, and then a coating of subtle psychedelia for color. Certain tracks stand out from the rest, namely “Skyscraper,” “Baby It’s Your Life,” and “The Loop,” but there are no poor efforts here. This is sunny indie-pop with substance.

flower in your head

this is the greatest record ever. everyone should have this.

This is really good. Especially in the loop and we get high. Its unexpected and amazing. Great album.

Amazing Follow-Up

I became a fan of John's back in 2004 when I stumbled upon his album "The Eastside Shake" via cdbaby. I picked up the record and fell in love with his sound, he has an unmistable voice and a very low-fi no frills approach to tracking a record and having it sound both lush but not mechanized. beyond that, let's focus on this album and it's songs, I had high hopes for the followup to "Eastside Shake", so when this album cam eout independantly a year or so ago I snatched it up and once again fell in love with his writting. the album is track for track amazing. and I am ecstatic to see that not only does he have a record deal now, but that it's with Vagrant, a once Punk only label thhat is quickly etsablishing itself as a force to be reconed with in all genres throughout the indie label world. way to go John!

Ward. Gold, who did a brief stint in New York City before settling in to the Hollywood apartment that would become his songwriting haven for almost a decade, released his...
