iTunes Review

Former Red House Painters bassist and touring member of Mark Kozelek’s Sun Kil Moon, Jerry Vessel creates an album with the same forlorn mood as his previous gigs. The pedal steel on the title track from former American Music Club member Bruce Kaphan, along with the harmonies from Vivian Ginn, make for a momentous track that should satisfy fans of American Music Club, Red House Painters, Low, Spain and other slo-core groups that have evolved over the decades. “Marianna’s Peace,” “Annie,” “Andrew & Emma” and “Anyway, Sweetness” are brilliant folk-country portraits rich with melody and emotion. There’s an early-‘70s feel to most of the tracks. The beautiful coupling of Vessel and Ginn creates a deeply evocative feel where one can nearly taste the rural air. “Beautiful Summer” is the upbeat number. “Ukelele Song” is the haunting slow piece. There isn’t a false note here. The album is perfectly formed and grows in depth with repeated listens.

Customer Reviews

Rock? Really?

This album belongs in the FOLK section. Definitely NOT rock. For a rock album, zero stars. Folk album, 4 stars! Nice melodies.
