iTunes Editors’ Notes

In a perfect world, “A Guide to the Outdoors” would be a staple on the best radio stations, its full-bodied acoustic guitars, reverberating bass, and barreling kick-drum whipping synths and strings into a soaring, exhilarating squall. Like much of Goodness Gracious — Chris Otepka/Heligoats' second effort since the demise of Otepka’s Troubled Hubble — "A Guide to the Outdoors" is a solid, airtight crafting of the best elements of pop music, devoid of any trendy trappings. This time around, Otepka utilizes Chicago psych-folkers Ulysses S. Grant in filling out his bittersweet, droll, and utterly engaging songs of longing, lust and bemusement at life’s turns, and there’s nary a misstep. Few bands know how to wield an acoustic guitar with the same sort of effusive agility and fierceness as Otepka does, and those imaginary, brave radio stations we dream about would play “Fish Sticks,” “Rubber Stopper” and “Heat Vents” til Otepka might retire from royalties.  Fans of Sea Wolf, Mountain Goats and Neutral Milk Hotel (for starters) should clasp Heligoats to their t-shirted chest and wonder what took them so long.

Next Big Thing

This album is one of my favorite albums of recent memory. There isn't one weak song and they have a great sound with pleasing rhythms, clever and interesting lyrics ("You take care of your own damn problems. Like a water-tower on fire." comes to mind), and enough variation to keep me interested.

I highly recommend this album to anybody into the alternative or indie music scenes and I predict that with some more air-play and publicity this band will take off.

Love.

I was watching NPR videos when I found The Heligoats and I bought this album on impulse. It's the greatest purchase I've made through iTunes thus far. When I hear lyrics and instrumentation as good as this it makes me want to weep because I know that my musical career will probably never amount to something as beautiful as this. I really can't say anything else, even though I should.

A great album.

Every song catches while remaining honest and blunt. These songs invoke memory and feeling while maintaining groove. I find it comforting.
