iTunes Review

Art Garfunkel’s solo output is probably best-served by an anthology like this 1988 release. The collection shows how scintillating his crystal-clear tenor can sound when applied to the right ballad — the pop arias “All I Know” and “Second Avenue” are particularly soul-stirring examples. His way with more intimate romantic material is shown to advantage in “99 Miles From L.A” and “I Only Have Eyes For You.” Jimmy Webb’s “Scissors Cut,” a slice of urbane angst, fits Garfunkel’s style nicely. There are enough high points here to make Garfunkel worth hearing for those who appreciate his exquisite voice (if not all of his career moves).

fine collection

SECOND AVENUE is missing??? It's right there, track 10! In fact, this is the only collection I know of that does feature it. But it's true, I SHALL SING is missed. In spite of that omission, still a very good sampling of Garfunkel's work. If you only have one, this is the one to have.

Second Avenue

Nice rendition but lacks the briliance of Tim Moore's original version. Unfortunatly that recording hasn't made its way to the digital world yet.

I have been more than a fan, a student of the works of Paul and Art, since about 1966. It is so terribly trite to knock down Art's solo career as an arranger and a singer by comparing it to Paul's songwriting career. As fine a songwriter as Paul is, his later works lack the orchestral quality and fantasic "soundmanship" that this album and virtually all of Art's later works possess.

After Simon & Garfunkel, one of the most successful duos in pop history, split up in 1970, Art Garfunkel became a solo artist, as well as pursuing an acting career. Garfunkel's pure, high tenor had been one of the most distinctive elements of the duo's music, yet he wasn't responsible for the songwriting -- Simon wrote all of the group's hits. Not surprisingly, Garfunkel relied on other songwriters, from Jimmy Webb and Randy Newman, in addition to rock & roll standards like "I Only Have Eyes for...
