A remarkable indie label in its day

Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss founded one of the most prolific independent labels of the 60's and 70's. They let the artists concentrate on ttheir music, not necessarily forcing them to write radio-friendly hits. As a result, most of the songs on this comp became hits of their era purely because they sounded different than anything on the air at the time. (A note to collectors: many of these cuts are the single versions and are not commonly available elsewhere except on the original vinyl 45.)

A&M continued to change the musical landscape with their diverse roster of artists well into the 80's until they were bought out by Polygram, then later Universal who closed their humble offices at La Brea & Sunset where some of the biggest talent recorded over the years. One glaring omission here is Herb Alpert's unlikely #1 hit ballad "This Guy's In Love With You" he performed on a 1968 TV special which ultimately became A&M's first #1single. Otherwise, this is a great sampler from one of the greatest independent record labels of all time, and the artists they nurtured who had many more hits than can be represented here.

Only the beginning

Wow. Great start, but still just a sampler. There is so much more to the A&M portfolio.
I remember this fabulous We Five song as a kid and grew up with almost all the others. These guys were visionaries.
I've always thought Herb Alpert's solo career was very under appreciated.

Especially great was his collaborations with Hugh Masekela which are still not available on iTunes with the exception of the one song, Skokiaan which is included in this compilation.

Please release those discs next!
