Lost Swimming in the Mainstream

I'm incredibly excited for Delta Rae's major-label success and widened airplay, and I wish them only the best. However, I am more than slightly disappointed with this banality and 'averageness' of these songs. Delta Rae's spark is missing here; these songs sound like forgettable country music radio filler compared to their unique, genre-bending epic anthems and heartfelt whispers of albums past. I love them dearly and I'm sure these songs will grow on me with time, but at the moment, I fear that my favorite band will lose their signature sound by swimming in the mainstream.

Do your self a favor. . .

Do your self a favor download this EP then download every other album Delta Rae has put out. If you love good music strong vocals stunningly beautiful lyrics. This band (and this EP) is your new best friend. Get to it! You won't be disappointed.

Precarious Time to be a DR Fan

I love Delta Rae a lot - like A LOT. They make amazing music and are incredible performers. When they first announced signing with Big Machine, I was both excited and nervous. Now, hearing these songs, I'm still split about 50/50. There is a lot more production value here - instruments they don't normally use, cleaning on the vocals that hasn't been there in the past, and a bit of that "slickness" that makes fans of little bands skittish. I enjoy these tracks (and I'm happy to see Ian and Eric wrote all of them) but I'm still anxious to hear what a full album sounds like. 4 - 6 more tracks like these will make for a load of talent and personality buried under a sheen of country pandering. I don't want them to lose the genre-sampling, tight-harmonied, varied-voices, earthy, pagan, homegrown feel they've had for five years. Here's hoping!

Earthy familial alt-pop outfit Delta Rae skillfully juggle gospel-tinged country-rock, sensual blue-eyed soul, and harmony-laden Americana, resulting in an infectious, radio-ready sound that falls somewhere between Nickel Creek and Adele. Formed in 2009 as a four-piece around the talents of siblings Ian, Eric, and Brittany Hölljes, along with Elizabeth Hopkins, the North Carolina-based band expanded to a sextet the following year with the additions of Mike McKee and Grant Emerson.
