Reseña de álbum

Chicago native and classically trained pianist Patricia Barber's sixth album is a collection of downtempo standards, perfect for a rainy day. Taking on classics like "Autumn Leaves," "I Fall in Love Too Easily," "Bye Bye Blackbird," or even "Alfie" is always a risk, but her confident vocals and interpretations eradicate any doubt that she is a master. Her production is spare, allowing her to sing with such melancholy it's almost eerie. Not many performers can relay such harrowing feeling without over-emoting, but Barber makes it seem effortless. Nightclub is an appropriate title; listening to these love songs is like being in a smoky room, courted by a lounge singer. This is a classy, solid effort.

A woman of enormous passion allows her genius to shape the lyrics into tell tale glimpses of her wants and needs. You doubt me? Listen to "All or Nothing at All' or "Bye Bye Blackbird." Sadly (if you've listened to her other "tortured artist" albums) this anti-Diana Krall masterpiece will get lost in the dust. I have contemplated flying to Chicago just to spend an evening at her club. My fear is that the night will be filled with her "musical workings-out of her problems" instead of enjoying a night with the best interpreter of the American Songbook I've ever heard.

This woman is a Master!

Patricia Barber is a master vocalist. She does what master vocalist is supposed to do, she pull emotions out of you that you did not know existed. You start off saying like some stupid intellectual well let me see how she interprets "Alfie" a song that can go wrong quickly. Well the song has ended 10 minutes ago and you are still crying. Feel it baby, feel it!

She is a modern day of the best among female vocalists like Melody Gardot, Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall and Madeleine Peyroux. Her brand of music is quite unique. She always has a section for her beautfilly crafted quartet music. The music arrangement is audiophile quality. Recording of her CDs are top nootched. Any serious music listener should have a good collection of her CDs. Night CLub is my favourite among her CDs. What a job to listen to her!

Patricia Barber's unique style and unusual voice made her an easy target for critics in the early days of her career. Her piano playing and singing, while inventive, never ventured close enough to the avant-garde to earn her artistic license, and her insistence on writing her own material and adapting songs from the pop world made her difficult to categorize. A tireless performer who refused to conform to more conventional vocal jazz idioms, she worked her way up through the Chicago jazz scene slowly,...
