It's no 'United By Fate' but after a 10 year layoff, it's pretty good

I didn't expect this album to be as great as 'United By Fate.' That was a near perfect album from beginnging to end, track to track. 'Pedals' doesn't seem to have the same post-hardcore feeling as did 'United By Fate.' 'Pedals' seems to have a little bit more of a 'pop' mentality. Either way, I'm glad they're back. They are a truly great band and hopefully they release new material soon.

Key tracks: Wring It Out, 69 Guns, A Parts For B Actors, Shot After Shot, Big Waves

Tracks I didn't care for: Choose Your Adventure, The Ghost Is Out There

But check out 'Paranoid Detectives.' Really good song. Don't know why that wasn't on the official album.

Pure Joy

Just as many other fans, I have been waiting for this album for ten years. It has been worth the wait. This album is a total joy to listen to.

10 years to make a new record and we got this?

I'm a HUGE fan of Walter. Have spent the last 18 years listening to Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, and Rival Schools. United by Fate was such an amazing first record. Shot after Shot was released as a single a while before Pedals was released and seemed to be an indication that the guys had stuck to the sound--and embellished on it--that made United by Fate so great. After hearing that song and the bonus track Arranged Marriages, I was expecting big things with this new record. Well, sadly, where there wasn't a weak song on United by Fate, at least half the album of Pedals is mediocre at best. It definitely doesn't sound like songs that had been conceptualized and fine-tuned over the past 10 years, 5 years or even 2 years for that matter... Shot after Shot is the best song on Pedals. It sounds like a lost song from the UbF sessions. Wouldn't be surprised if it was. Eyes wide open is a pleasantly Quicksand-esque track. 69 Guns is a good song. Wring it out is decent. Other than these songs, the rest of the record is really not that good nor does it sound heartfelt. It sounds like songs were just thrown together and with the hopes of releasing some radio friendly numbers. Seriously, guys... ONLY 10 SONGS? 10 years and you barely managed to get a full-length record's worth of songs released? I am thoroughly disappointed by Pedals. Let's hope the guys either get it in gear and take the sound of UbF further, or just quit releasing records all together. I kind of lost a bit of respect for Walter after this one...

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Born out of a hearty hardcore pedigree, the members of Rival Schools stepped to the plate with a phenomenal history and the qualities that would point towards an amazing future. Singer and guitarist Walter Schreifels began making waves as the guitarist for '80s hardcore pioneers Gorilla Biscuits and then went on to influence the entire post-hardcore movement with his influential work in Quicksand, as well as production for acts like CIV and Hot Water Music. Drummer Sam Siegler has seen almost as...
