Album Review

Sweden might be the home of Ikea, ABBA, and melodic death metal, but after listening to Formshifter, listeners would be surprised to learn that it is not, in fact, the home of Allegaeon — who hail from Colorado. The band's sophomore outing channels the melodic fury of At the Gates and Arch Enemy with an absolute nonstop riff-fest of an album that feels like a direct descendant of the Gothenburg sound in a way that a lot of American bands just can't capture. While this means that Formshifter isn't anything revolutionary or experimental, the things that are happening show that Allegaeon are looking to perfect the wheel rather than reinvent it, delivering a visceral and technically dazzling performance that pays homage to the bands that came before them without feeling like an out-and-out rehash of their sound. Melodic death metal fans who might've slept on Allegaeon's first album will definitely find something worth their time here.

Wish I could listen to the whole thing

Love this band, they have a great sound. Tracks 4 and 5 are mixed up. 4 is also broken, cutting off around the 3 minute mark. The song Twelve is actually iconic images. Get it together iTunes. Testify for my victims-Carnal forge doesn't have a correct track name on it. What is going on? If it was a "pop" artist these mistakes wouldn't be made.

This album is most awesome!

I've been listening to these guys since the beginning, and let me tell you.. they never disappoint! Every release is better than the last and this new album demonstrates that perfectly. Ryan and Greg write killer riffs, Corey holds it down, and Ezra just writes some awesome catchy hooks that I feel are greatly unrivaled in the genre. More than this, the songs have lyrical content that is intelligent and well thought out. I love these guys. Buy this album, you wont regret it!

Amazing album

Super technical and musically genius. Raising the bar for metal yet again.

Formed: 2008 in Colorado

Genre: Metal

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Hailing from Colorado, Allegaeon fuse punishing death metal riffs with expansive, surprisingly non-death-obsessed lyrics to create their own style of thoughtful and pummeling heavy metal. Formed in 2008 by guitarists Ryan Glisan and Greg Burgess, bassist Corey Archuleta, and vocalist Ezra Haynes, the band got off to a ripping start after their self-titled, four-song EP got them signed to Metal Blade just a year after forming. The band made their full-length debut in 2010 with Fragments of Form and...
