iTunes Review

Owen Ashworth is perhaps best known to indie rock folks as the one-man band Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. He's now put an end to that chapter and started anew as Advance Base, but he hasn't lost his interest in the lower end of the fidelity spectrum. His cheap keyboards remain close at hand, ready to add a dreamlike quality to his unusual tunes. A Shut-In's Prayer sounds grand in its own way, with "Christmas in Oakland" reflecting an alienation that's deep and purely felt (even if he does sing "I don't feel a thing"). The doom-laden chords suggest a mood of wistful nostalgia and great pain, and there's a sense of strong alienation throughout the album. Often, the accumulation of so many lonely years causes the characters in his songs to crack. "The Sister You Never Had" reports on what's left of a broken family with "Mom at Christmas and Dad at Thanksgiving/Your brother you won't see at all." These are dark songs dependent on facts that may or may not be remembered correctly, where the feelings may or may not be deserved.

I saw Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's last show in San Francisco, and it was predictably wonderful, but I did still feel painfully alone with the thought of no more CFTPA....

but, this is great, and I love it, and it makes me feel less alone. Oh, I'll still continue listening to my favorite Casiotone songs, but this is such a beautiful addition and I am grateful for its existence.

Turning Over a New Leaf

Leaving behind Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and beginning Advance Base... closing a door opens up a new window, or so they say. Glad to see that Owen Ashworth is as active as ever producing music that I love. For this album, the songs may get a little repetitive after a while, but he's just exploring a new style. His other new Advance Base album, the instrumental one, shows a lot more variety. Keep up the good work!

Advance Base is a project helmed by indie pop singer/songwriter Owen Ashworth, previously known for his long-running indie electronic outfit Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. Born in Redwood City, California in 1977, Ashworth began making lo-fi pop songs on cheap Casio keyboards in 1997, combining wry and bitter yet heartfelt and earnest lyricism with bright, simple melodies. Through the course of five full-length albums (all released by German indie label Tomlab) as well as numerous singles and...
