iTunes Review

After more than two years following a celebrated single and EP, the anticipated debut album by Sweden’s Korallreven is sure to hit home with anyone into the like-minded uplifting and electronic-based music of its contemporaries Air France, jj, Panda Bear, and The Tough Alliance. But the opening cut, “As Young as Yesterday,” reveals a hint of cosmopolitan Parisian-pop cool throughout An Album by Korallreven, which has more in common with Air and Phoenix. Korallreven is the duo of Marcus Joons and Daniel Tjäder (who moonlights in the dreampop band Radio Dept.). Some of Tjäder’s shoegaze influences surface in songs like the blissed-out “Keep Your Eyes Shut” and the lilting “Pago Pago.” The duo flirts ever so slightly with reggae’s repetitive staccato guitar riffs and bouncing rhythms in the sunny “Honey Mine,” where icy synthesizers approximate dubby melodica tones. Victoria Bergsman’s androgynous guest vocals here recall some Ace of Base moments (hardly a bad thing). “Comin’ Down” closes with nine minutes of elongated grooves stretched over a canvas of ambient soundscapes.

Even though only a few cuts appeal to me, I like the sound of this group. Some of the tunes are a little too repetitious. I like the ambient sound. My picks are 'As Young As Yesterday', 'Sa Sa Samoa', 'The Truest faith'. The rest of the album is so-so. 'Honey Mine' is totally out of context here. Better luck with their next album.

Best Track is First Track!

I agree with cyclist. Not the best overall album, but the first track has a **lovely** exuberance. It's like Paul Simon got thrown into a blender with Balam Acab.

Korallreven are a Swedish electronic pop duo made up of Marcus Joons and Daniel Tjäder, who also plays in the band Radio Dept. The duo's dreamy, synth-heavy sound, which mixes shoegaze textures with dancefloor-friendly beats, isn't far from the sound of fellow Swedes jj, the Tough Alliance, and Air France, as well as Panda Bear. They released their first single, "Loved-Up," in July of 2009 for the Swedish label Service. They signed to the Canadian label Acephale and in April of 2010 released a 12"...
