Reseña de álbum

With the saturation of Tyrone Davis greatest-hits compilations on the market, it's hard to decipher which among them is truly definitive of the Chicago soul singer's long and esteemed career. While 2005's excellent Give It Up (Turn It Loose) paints a great retrospective, it only covers his later years. And while 2001's 20 Greatest Hits compilation on Brunswick is concise and details his gritty early years, it only covers the hits, many of which die-hard fans would already own. So Brunswick, in keeping with Sony's recent Essential campaign, has co-opted that series' aesthetics and concept for The Ultimate Tyrone Davis, a two-disc, 40-track affair covering all points of his career on Dakar (a Brunswick sublabel) and featuring some amazing session musicians. It's a bit daunting for an introductory piece, but the remastering quality is impeccable and brings out Davis' voice in a bright, crisp fashion on top of the mix. Die-hard fans may already own most of these tracks thanks to 2004's The Dakar Records A's & B's: The Hit Singles compilation, but may want to consider upgrading for the sound quality and thorough liner notes. The Ultimate Tyrone Davis is a nice starting point for those investigating the soul artist's catalog, and when supplemented by Give It Up (Turn It Loose), provides the most thorough collection of Davis' work available.

Give it up for TD

This is a great place to start with Tyrone--all of his 70s hits and the best album cuts on one album. You probably have heard "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" and "Can I Change My Mind," but check out "A Woman Needs To Be Loved" and "I Keep Coming Back" (covered by the Afgan Whigs) for the deeper stuff. Great wounded-heart soul that goes down like bittersweet chocolate. If you dig this, check out the In The Mood collection for the stuff me made later...

Great Voice . . . Turn Back The Hands Of Time

I love listening to this Song, especially the version by David Ruffin. Tyron Davis's few songs are ones I listen to all the time. I would reccomend listening and downloading only the popular ones because they are the oldies but goodies.

Ultimate Collection.....Almost

Yes, this is a thorough collection of Tyrone's best 1968-1976, only leaving out the minor hits "I Can't Make It Without You" and "All the Waiting Is Not In Vain". But how can it be called "ULTIMATE" if it doesn't cover ANY of the non-Dakar label hits after 1976? Instead of 17 filler cuts, I'd have prefered some of Tyrone's later hits, like "Give It Up (Turn It Loose)". And WHY is "One-Way Ticket" MONO here when it's STEREO everywhere else? Otherwise, a GREAT package from Tyrone's golden years.

Nacido/a: Greenville, MS, 04 de mayo de 1938

Género: R&B/Soul

Años de actividad: '70s, '80s, '90s

The king of romantic Chicago soul, Tyrone Davis' warm, aching vulnerability and stylish class made him especially popular with female soul fans during a lengthy hitmaking run that lasted throughout the '70s. Best known for the classics "Can I Change My Mind" and "Turn Back the Hands of Time," Davis was a versatile baritone singer who could handle everything from pop-soul to funk to bluesy chitlin-circuit R&B, but smooth soul was his true bread and butter. Once Davis broke through in the late...
