Editors’ Notes

Like everyone else, we first fell in love with Erykah Badu on her 1997 debut single, “On & On.” But it was her 2000 sophomore studio album, Mama’s Gun—creatively restless, stylistically adventurous, lyrically direct—that made us stay in love. The screaming live-band funk of opener “Penitentiary Philosophy” tells you right away you shouldn’t settle in expecting a rehash of her debut’s smooth R&B. And while a remix of “Bag Lady” was its biggest single, we’ll never get over album closer “Green Eyes,” a wrenching, ravishing song suite narrating the end of a relationship.

One Of The Best Most Slept On Album Ever Made

This album should have won a Grammy for its production and sound quality alone! The Sound is flawless! The engineers achieve a Live performance sound in the studio. It’s as if Erykah is giving you a private show in your home, car . . . Erykah’s writing is intimate and courageous. The Music is no less impressive, with its fresh melodies, and warm harmonies. This work is a classic, and if you don’t already own it, I suggest you WAKE UP!

This has got to be on the best albums that was released in 2000 but sadly it never has gotten the props it deserves. She went all across the board lyrically and musically(jazz, rock, hip-hop, reggae) and IT IS WONDERFULL!!! I have purchased this albums at least three time cause I play it so much I scratch it up terribly. Not to take anything away from was a great one also but you definitely heard and could relate to her evoultion as a artist(and as a woman) on MAMA'S GUN. This album never ceases to empower me

One of the best albums of the century.......

I love every single song on this album. They're so deep, and sooo good. Great to listen to while sitting outside in the park, on the metro, taking a bath......whatever. I love it!

Born: February 26, 1971 in Dallas, TX

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

She grew up listening to '70s soul and '80s hip-hop, but Erykah Badu drew more comparisons to Billie Holiday upon her breakout in 1997, after the release of her first album, Baduizm. The grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy R&B, but Badu's languorous, occasionally tortured vocals and delicate phrasing immediately removed her from the legion of cookie-cutter female R&B singers. A singer/songwriter responsible for all but one of the songs on Baduizm, she found a number 12 hit with her...
