Album Review

K toz features Kassav''s zouk founding fathers, Georges Decimus and Jacob Desvarieux, plus all the mainstays except Patrick Saint-Eloi. As usual, the production is first rate. The enormous lineup of Antillean and African churn out tremendous torque here nevertheless. There's also plenty of pulverizing percussion and swing for dancers. Kassav' always manages to reconnect with its drumming roots, gwo ka and zouk's precursor, cadence. They also deftly inject touches of creolized European dance rhythms into the pot. The mix of all these styles and many more went into creating the primal zouk wave. Kassav' is the best at reaffirming all these musical currents that go into the fine mix that is zouk par excellence. The different vocalists' timbre always give Kassav' albums varied textures and feelings. This album doesn't take a ballad breather until the ninth track. The founding fathers can still kick it, and kick they do after 25 or so releases. Highly recommended.

I love Jacob Desvarieux' voice! He is just awesome. I've been a fan of Kassav since I was a small kid living on the Islands. Thank you so much iTunes for having this type of music. You'e just made a fan for life!

The Pop Rocks of world music

Kassav' tunes are colorful confections that expode when they get inside your head. "Ktoz" is just as energetic and creative as early Kassav' but more polished. "Nou Ped Chimen" takes the Gipsy Kings to the islands, "An Sansib" will have you singing into your hairbrush and "Leron" does the impossible - rocks in three-quarter time. Tracks two and eight are concessions to the dancehall generation and forgettable.

The zouk scene evolved from a studio project by Guadeloupian Pierre-Edouard Decimus, who had moved to Paris in the late '70s following an extremely successful career as co-leader of the legendary cadence band Les Vikings de la Guadeloupe. Enlisting the services of his brother Georges and Paris studio wizard Jacob Desvarieux, himself a Guadeloupian, Decimus began to forge a new sound that treated Antilles musical traditions to the state of the art recording technology available in Paris. By 1984 the...
