Editors’ Notes

For ten years, Rodney Crowell had written hits for other artists while watching his own career chug along fitfully. His breakthrough came at last with 1988’s Diamonds & Dirt, a nearly flawless collection of rootsy country-rock tunes. This album went on to yield five Number One singles, one of which (“After All This Time”) earned Crowell a Grammy. The real accomplishment, though, is that this veteran singer/songwriter finally connected with a mass audience by keeping his lyrics direct and grounding his music in taut rockabilly riffs and melancholy honky-tonk melodies. The results invoke the operatic yearning of Roy Orbison and the jaunty bounce of Buck Owens without imitating either. Picking favorites on an album this consistent isn’t easy. On the upbeat side, the wry “She’s Crazy For Leavin’” and the Beatles-esque “I Know You’re Married” offer high-spirited kicks. Tracks like “It’s Such A Small World” (a duet with then-wife Rosanne Cash) and “The Last Waltz” are sensitive yet sobered looks at love. “After All This Time” and “I Didn’t Know I Could Lose You” demonstrate Crowell’s masterful way with heartbreak balladry. Pure and simple, Diamonds & Dirt is a gem.

Customer Reviews

What, you've never heard of 'Diamond's and Dirt'?

Man, you've been missing out on possibly and certainly arguably the BEST DARN country CD (album) ever recorded and definitely up in the lofty ranks of Hank Williams and Willie Nelson!!! If you are a lover of country music, YOU NEED THIS CD!!!! I believe it (D & D) won 7 Grammy's, so don't just take my word for it. This was country when country was VERY COOL!!!! I only wish Rodney would consider re-issuing his CD "Street Language" which had some beautiful songs on it and was mightily underrated in the mire of those 80's nouveau singles. Rodney Crowell is a master of his craft and I challenge you to find anything he's worked on that isn't at least VERY, VERY GOOD!!!

after all this time

After all this time, this is still one of the best and most beautiful songs ever

Great album..

BUT..half of the songs have errors in the tracks and doesn’t even play 15 seconds in the songs before going on to the next..anyways to fix these so i can get the full songs??

When Rodney Crowell first gained widespread recognition as a leader of the new traditionalist movement of the mid-'80s, he was, in fact, a singer, songwriter, and producer with roots and ambitions extending far beyond the movement's perimeters. Born to a musical family on August 7, 1950 in Houston, Texas, Crowell formed his first band, the Arbitrators, while in high school, and in 1972 moved to...
