iTunes Review

Absence is the debut full-length release from Paper Route, an ambitious Nashville-based electronic pop quartet. The band is aiming for a grand statement, and while they don't always hit that mark, there’s a lot here to absorb and enjoy. Overall, it sounds like they recorded acoustic instruments and then reassembled the pieces into new creations that are heavy on atmosphere and shimmering textures, with a good middle ground achieved between the synths and the electric guitar. The songs are lushly orchestrated and dynamic, with many samples, beats, and ambient sounds mixed into the whole. Arena-ready anthems like “Wish” and “Carousel” are set against cinematic tunes like “No Sudden Revelations” and “Lover’s Anthem” to give the album balance. Vocally, the harmonies are good with their moody melodies often delivered in an emotional and earnest falsetto. Fans of Snow Patrol, Coldplay, the Postal Service, and the like will easily fall for Paper Route’s brand of dramatic, dreamy electro pop.

Nothing absent from "Absence"

Paper Route has the ability to bring harmony out of discord, sweetness out of otherwise bitter notes, and to fuse together a cornucopia of various sounds from the organic to the synthetic, from strings and piano to electronic beats and echos. Although experimental, every song is recognizable and purposeful, leading the listener into anthemic, reverberating sonicscapes with firm percussion and passionate vocals. Each song is thoroughly vivid and complex, allowing the listener to put any one of them on repeat and let it play over again until satisfied. Fast-paced songs like "Carousel" and "Wish" have an energy that's catchier than some of the more dreamy, melancholy tracks like "Enemy Among Us" or "No Sudden Revelations" yet even those come across vibrant and moving. Particularly notable is "Tiger Teeth" with its emphatic, staccato-like punches, whereas the song "Gutter" seems to be an equal blend of experimental pop and sailing ambience, certainly worthy of Radiohead or Mute Math. This album will leave you feeling dreamy, nostalgic, and energized. There is certainly nothing absent from "Absence."

Beautifully Crafted

I've never written a review on iTunes, but I can't stop myself from writing something about this album. I'm not sure there are words to describe how original and talented these guys are. This is the best album I have ever listened to by far. Each song, based on its instrumental and lyric perfection, is aesthetically pleasing to a point that most bands rarely master in their entire career. This is a type of album that once you start listening to, you don't want to stop and get excited to listen to it over and over again. It's the best purchase I've made in a long time and just can't say enough about it. Buy it now! You won't regret it.

Formed: 2004 in Nashville, TN

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Blending digital-age pop/rock with ambient electronics, Nashville's Paper Route got their start in the summer of 2004, when founder Chad Howat began assembling tracks in the middle of the night in an attempt to battle his insomnia. Encouraged by his creations, he recruited friends and former bandmates J.T. Daly and Andy Smith to collaborate on this new work. Following some further contributions, the trio soon completed enough material for a pair of EPs that they released in late 2006. By this time...
