iTunes Review

Bob Pollard is the musical equivalent of an action painter. He writes and records in motion, he doesn’t think too much about it, he doesn’t slow down, and he goes with his gut ending up wherever the day takes him. This is his second solo album of 2006 and like all of his output – most recorded as Guided By Voices – it’s an exciting mélange of pop styles that hits the ear with an agreeable, familiar cadence and yet an element of strangeness that makes each listen a new experience. You can hear glimpses of old school influences -- the Kinks, the Bee Gees, the Free Design – and shared faith with modern stylists – the Clientele, Belle & Sebastian. Yet, there’s never any question that here is another Bob Pollard production, as the lyrics and song titles pile up in good humor (“Serious Bird Woman (You Turn Me On),” “Tomorrow Will Not Be Another Day”), his vocals stray towards an English accent, and the songs whisk past at 16 in 35 minutes.

Original... I like it alot

You should consider this album

"Supernatural Car Lover" worth the $10

"Serious Bird Woman" is worth more.

Rhoda Rhoda

Great album! A weird prog album with some stand out tracks. If you are not familiar with his music I recommend starting off by buying Tracks 1, 3 and 10. If you only wanna pay 99 cents for a test spin, go for "Rhoda Rhoda". It is probably the catchiest song of the litter and with stick in your head like taffy covered in glue. Here's a song writer that writes songs for the songs. Not for the radio or gap commercials. More arty than commercial. The songs have alotta unusual changes and twists, the lyrics are both identifiable and alien. Try it, you'll like it.

One of the things that made Guided by Voices' rise from underground curios to indie superstars in the early '90s so noteworthy was that vocalist/guitarist Robert Pollard was also a teacher, an uncommon occupation for rock & roll idols. Pollard was born on October 31, 1957, in Dayton, Ohio. As a child, he was groomed by his father to become a professional athlete, and pitched a no-hitter for his high-school baseball team, but in college he realized that music meant more to him than sports.
