Some good songs, rest mediocre
I just finished listening to this, and I have to say that it exceeded my expectations, but barely, and they were quite low. Here are my thoughts:
-Bebe Neuwirth's vibrato needs to be controlled. Her songs should sound nice with some vibrato added, but she sounds like she's in a horse drawn carriage on a cobblestone road. In "Move Toward the Darkness", when she sings a few lines with Krysta Rodriguez, her vibrato just makes me want to punch something really really hard.
-Krysta Rodriguez, Wesley Taylor, Jackie Hoffman, Terrance Mann, Kevin Chamberlin, the kid who plays Pugsley, and the guy who plays Lurch were all perfectly cast. They give great performances and are all highlights of the show.
-Nathan Lane overacts too much. It kind of works with the character, and I know that he does this all the time, but it's annoying
-Jackie Hoffman is underused. She's hilarious in "Let's Not Talk About Anything Else But Love", but that's the only time she's onstage in Act II. If she had a solo, she could steal the show on the album.
-Best songs: "Pulled", "One Normal Night", "Full Disclosure", "Crazier Than You", "In the Arms", "When You're an Adams", "What If"
-Weakest Songs: "Where Did We Go Wrong", "Morticia", "Waiting", "Just Around the Corner", "Happy/Sad"
Overall, the better songs outnumber the weaker songs, but they are not strong enough to make up for the weak songs completely
Also, kudos to iTunes for including the digital booklet (it's the lyric booklet that is included in the physical CD if you buy it at a store. It's nice to have the bonus track "Not Today", but it's not one of the best songs on here. I would have preferred "Clandango" to be recorded instead.
A lot of the mixing on this CD is quite odd. It's as if they wanted you to hear the principles on top of the ensemble, so they made them a bit louder. In "When You're an Adams", you can hear Jackie Hoffman's Grandma voice stick out, and it's weird. Things like this happen many other times on the CD.
In conclusion, I would only recommend this cast recording to people who like to collect cast recordings and want to hear as many musicals as possible, or if you saw the show and enjoyed it. Otherwise, I'd say only buy this if it's selling for less than $10.
It's up! The Addams Family!
I all ready have the CD and it's amazing piece of work and I thank you iTunes for finally getting it up! If your looking for a fun album full of Broadways newest music this is it! Highly recommend downloading and loving! Now all we need is Clandango......
