Album Review

While Aegis doesn't particularly expand Theatre of Tragedy's sound — goth-metal topped with male/female shared vocals — it does refine and polish the approach.

Among the Best Ever Made

Bias alert, this band is turning into my favorite band. But of all the sound that I've heard from the band, this is by far the best. This album has a refined gothic sound that can be played for hours on end. Each song streams into the next to make an amazing album. If you can, find the special edition or buy the song Samantha as well from one of the EPs. It fits in nicely with the rest of the album. Overall, this album is one of the best I've ever heard-- a sound investment.

Haunting, Unique, and Not For Everyone

Aegis was the album that got me introduced to the sounds of bands in this specific genre, which may actually bias my review in their favor since it was the first time I'd heard anything even remotely like it. The female vocals are absolutely haunting and the male lead's voice has enough edge to satisfy those with heavier tastes. Of all the songs on the album, though, Venus is the one that truly captures Theatre of Tragedy in my mind. It's melodic, dark and entrancing with just enough edge to make it rock. It's my favorite song off of all of their albums thus far. This is a great album to add variety and texture to your music portfolio, whether you're a very ecclectic collector or a purist.

One of my 10 ten albums of all time.

Perhaps one of the most underated albums of all time in my opinion. When you look at it from thier previous metal past you might glaze over this as not being one of thier heavy albums. But this is their take at a modern Gothic Rock album, not only that, but dare I say one of the best gothic rock albums ever. For anyone into goth music is the slightest, this album is essential. Not a weak song in the bunch.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Formed out of Norway's famed black metal scene, Theatre of Tragedy combine elements of goth and metal with an added touch of drama thanks in part to the dual vocals of Raymond I. Rohonyi and Liv Kristine Espenaes. With the accompaniment of Frank Claussen (guitars), Tommy Olsson (guitars/programming), Eirik T. Saltroe (bass), Hein Frode Hansen (drums) and Lorentz Aspen (synthesizer), Theatre of Tragedy orchestrates a different performance piece with each song, while the singers bounce dialogues off...
