Sorry Butch… Don’t care for it.

I really like Butch and his music. Until this album. I get that he was grieving over his Dad, but it’s just not an enjoyable set of songs to me… At all. That said - “The Spade” is a freakin’ great album! More like that next time, please!

Butch lays it all out there…

… the talent to do what Butch does as a singer/songwriter and artist simply doesn’t get enough credit. Years back he penned “Sycamore Meadows” after losing almost all his possessions in the Malibu fires; which proved to be an album about rebuilding, bouncing back, prioritizing and working out a slew of emotions.

From there, a few fun-spirited efforts with his band The Black Widows followed, but not another tragedy prompted Butch to dig deep and let it all out; the passing of his father, friend and biggest fan.

“Afraid Of Ghosts” was produced by the equally-as-brilliant Ryan Adams; which makes for a somber, stripped-down, raw and honest journey. Butch gave up the reigns of the control board and allowed Adams to guide these songs to a simple and perfect place.

If “The Spade” was Butch’s summertime anthem record, “Afraid Of Ghosts” is made for a chilly autumn afternoon, or for deep late night reflecting.

Here’s hoping Butch does a 180-degree turn next record, tapping back into some of the other styles and genres he’s so good at—but super-thankful he dug deep and pulled out something as poignant and necessary as “Afraid Of Ghosts”.

Certainly not an every day record; but in the right moments and headspace, nothing else will suffice.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Bed On Fire, 21+, Chrissie Hynde, Afraid Of Ghosts, Father’s Day, The Dark

Deeper gold

Everything that went into this album and the final product is a rare find. This album has a vulnerable beauty to it, and frankly ... I dig it!
