Album Review

To many, Toto are considered first and foremost a "studio creation," as the original lineup was comprised of already accomplished session players. But unlike, say, Steely Dan, who for an extended period focused solely on studio work, Toto steadily backed up their albums with live work. That said, a Toto concert album will never be mistaken for Live at Leeds, as they don't stray far from the original studio versions (save for extended "jam" passages), as evidenced throughout 2008's Falling in Between Live. Recorded at a stop in Paris during their 2007 tour, the set list manages to include Toto classics ("Hold the Line," "Rosanna," "Africa") as well as new material ("Falling in Between," "King of the World," "Bottom of Your Soul"). And only at a Toto concert would you get not one, not two, but three chop-showcasing solos (by keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, guitarist Steve Lukather, and drummer Simon Phillips). So from that standpoint, Falling in Between Live is a fitting, true-to-form souvenir of Toto's 2007 world tour.

Best Live Album EVER!!

I have been a fan of Toto for 20 years, thanks to my best friend in high school. I have seen them live many times, and NEVER been disappointed. This is by far the best live recording I have ever heard from them....and that's saying ALOT!! Having played drums (and taught) drums for 30 years, I have the most appreciation for Simon...he is TRULY a god. I actually got the chills and started tearing up during his solo. Amazing record...they should NEVER stop making music...that would be a huge loss for people who appreciate REAL musical talent, not overproduced, beat centric, non-melodic, crap that makes up 99% of the industry today.

Getting better all the time!

I saw these guys in Salt Lake City this last year and was absolutely blown-away! As a drummer, I was focused on Simon Phillips, truly one of the best drummers of our time and he didn't disappoint. But I was quickly captivated by the magnificent guitar riffs of Steve Lukather. This is not the soft-core pop band of the 70's and 80's. I would have never believed they could be as tight live as they are in their studio albums, but they are. The list of artists Lukather and Phillips have collaborated with over the years is truly astounding and the broad musical influences show in their work. By far the best live album in my musical library. Buy it!!!

Toto, Toto, how can they not know? You've been pumping out the best music around for 30 years or so! Your writing, your skills, makes my insides glow, To fully understand you must see their show! (But if you can't see their show then get off of your duff and buy this album. It is unbelievable. These guys never get the credit they deserve for being amazing. AMAZING!!! INCREDIBLY AMAZING!!! Buy and listen over and over and over again.

The original members of Toto were L.A.-based session men who had played with everyone from George Benson to Boz Scaggs and wanted to create something they could call their own. They scored a hit straight out of the gate with the album rock hit "Hold the Line" from their 1978 debut. Their biggest success, however, came in the early '80s with a pair of smash hits, "Rosanna" and "Africa," plus the breakout, six-Grammy success of the Toto IV album. The band endured some major personnel shake-ups over...
