The Mix Tape

Nicholas Payton has been known to push the limits of traditional jazz. From the samples that I've heard, this will be another of those limit pushers. I can't wait!

4.5 Stars

I don't like to give 5-star ratings, so count this as 4.5.

Atmospheric, layered soundscape that seems more acid-noir than Caribbean -- AC Mixtape makes me feel like I'm touring Polanski's Chinatown with Sly Stone. That being said, its antecedents are clearly late-60s Miles with Kind of Blue hovering over all.

Skittering turntables and muttered vocals build on Payton's repetitive keyboard and sudden virtuoso trumpet solos to form a highly original listening experience. While AC Mixtape won't be for all tastes, it will long resonate with those it connects with.

Jazz?

uh, no. Not sure what you call this crap. One thing's for certain: it ain't jazz.
