Album Review

In a time when Michigan exploded as a hotbed of electronica and white-boy hip-hop innovation, Ann Arbor's Taproot emerged to restore Michigan to the riff-laden, rock & roll glory of the Ted Nugent '70s. Having build a heavy underground following through its live performances, early self-released albums, and website, Taproot stepped into the national spotlight with a debut bound to please 16 and 17 year olds everywhere. It's all here: heavy riffs, distorted rapping vocals, "life sucks" lyrics, and angry growling. These guys seem serious about their music, which is refreshing. There are no gimmicks like clown masks or fake b-boy posing. This guys are just about hard rock & roll, and they excel as musicians.

Nice Reviews...

This is a great album regardless of whether someone is 16 to 17 years old or not. I'm tired of how condescending iTunes album reviews are. Music means different things to different people and no one has the right to judge someone else's taste. Every type of music conveys an emotion and the emotion conveyed by this album happens to be anger; something everyone experiences and can relate to on a daily basis. You don't need to be an “angsty teen” (as was said in the Blue Sky Research album review) to appreciate music like this and if someone doesn't have a taste for these particular songs, please move along to something you do like without leaving your veiled insults behind so others can enjoy their choice in music. It's ironic that the reviewer believes Taproot needs to grow up when they don't seem to have matured much themselves.

THIS is what TAPROOT is.

This is the greatest CD ever made. Buy two copies. Promise.

This album is old school/classical taproot!

Formed: 1997 in Ann Arbor, MI

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Ann Arbor, MI's own Taproot sent their demo to Limp Bizkit's frontman/business entrepreneur Fred Durst in 1998, not ever thinking Durst would call them back personally. To the band's surprise, Durst replied, promising the alt-punk metal quartet the world. But Durst apparently took too long to deliver the goods, for Taproot -- whose lineup comprised frontman Stephen Richards, guitarist Michael DeWolf, bassist Philip Lipscomb, and drummer Jarrod Montague -- landed a deal with Atlantic Records instead....
