Martin Mull & His Fabulous Furniture in Your Living Room was the comedian's second album for Capricorn, and it was one of his best, featuring such classic, uproarious routines as "Dueling Tubas," "Ukulele Blues," "Licks Off of Records," "2001 Polka," "Martin, Leon, Elton and John," "Ah, France" and "In the Eyes of My Dog." If you don't get his humor, you won't get this record, but if you do get it, go out and get it. It's funny.
A Concept Album
This album is set up as a spoof of a live performance in an exceedingly small venue. Musical tracks are introduced by Mull talking to the "audience" (and the audience laughing) before each number. If you don't listen to this entire album in sequence at least once, then you will utterly fail to appreciate it. The musical numbers are good enough (or sometimes silly enough) to stand alone... but, believe me, if you don't first listen to the "Return of the Big Bands" (intro), you will not get the point of "2001 Polka." Also, note that the intros are credited to Martin Mull, while the musical tracks are credited to "Fabulous Furniture & Martin Mull" ...so, your iTunes preferences need to sort music by album rather than by artist, or else they will not fall in the right order in your library. Every musical track on this album is funny or interesting. My personal favorite is Billy One-Eye, with its cheerfully creepy ambience. (Again: listen to the intro -- A Tribute to Bert Parks -- first!) -- jmr
Where is the self-titled album "Martin Mull" with the great "Miami" - "Livin' Above my Station" - "Ventriloquist Love" -"Eggs" - "Dancin in the Nude"???? Please iTunes get it on - I sold my old LP! Boo hoo!
Great music and comedy but where are the others?
Martin Mull's records were our comedy records back in college in the 70's. Hearing this again, it still holds up. This is a great collection of hysterically funny songs and comedy chatter. His talk about the encore and his musical influences will leave you in tears. Unfortunately there is so much more Martin Mull music out there - Miami, What I Really Need Right Now is a Nurse, Noses Run in My Family, Men - when can we get the rest. It's great to have this but we need more!
