So much potential - and so much disappointment

At first glance this would appear to be an album that cannot fail: Placido Domingo, Elana Obraztsova, the incomporable Claudio Abaddo - even the DGG lable is a strong selling point. But the performance is destroyed by Katia Ricciarelli's disastrous singing - or at least attempts at singing. I am amazed that DGG allowed this album to see release. Katia does fine as long as the part is mid-range, but the extremeties (both low and high) are almost embarrasing to listen to: several times she sounds as though she is running out of breath or running out of voice. There are several cracked notes, audible strains, and gasps for breath as though she were choking. It is a terrible thing to say but even her first entrance is obviously flawed - and as for "O Patria Mia" it is almost painful to listen to.

If you can ignore the lead, the rest of the cast turn in a stunning performance: Elena and Placido are in top form and deliver some chillingly intense arias. The orchestra is flawless and the performance tight. If only....

It is still worth listening to even with the flaws mentioned (partially because the lead soprano strangely does not appear in every scene) - but be prepared to wince.
